Iceland forestry and climate change Þröstur Eysteinsson, Director, Icelandic Forest Service: Iceland was practically treeless in the early 20th century. Our only native forest-forming tree species was the crooked and usually low-growing downy birch. Native birchwoods were protected beginning around 1900 and we began regularly planting trees for afforestation around 1950. Since then, we have planted a total of roughly 50,000 ha (0.5% of Iceland) and birch forests and woodlands have spread to about 150,000 ha. Therefore, just about 2% of Iceland has forest or woodland cover, one of the lowest in the world in terms of land area. |
